About this generator
This generator picks from 8 birds: owl, eagle, penguin, parrot, flamingo, ostrich, peacock, and hummingbird. Each card shows a picture, one fact, and the bird’s habitat, diet, and size.
Birds cover the widest range of any category here. A hummingbird weighs a few grams and beats its wings 80 times a second. An ostrich can’t fly at all but outruns a horse at 70 km/h. This category is a favorite for bird-watchers introducing kids to their hobby, ornithology students, and teachers doing units on adaptation and flight.
10 bird facts that sound made up
- A hummingbird’s heart beats 1,260 times per minute. During flight, its heart pumps blood so fast that its wings can beat 80 times per second β creating the humming sound they’re named for.
- Owls can turn their heads 270 degrees. Their neck has 14 vertebrae (humans have 7) and a special blood-pooling system that keeps their brain fed during the extreme rotation.
- Penguins propose with pebbles. AdΓ©lie and gentoo penguins present a smooth stone to their chosen mate β if she accepts, it goes into their nest and they’re bonded.
- Flamingos are born grey. They turn pink from carotenoid pigments β mainly canthaxanthin and astaxanthin β in the shrimp, algae, and larvae they eat. Zoo flamingos need supplemented feed or they fade to white.
- African grey parrots handle tasks usually reserved for young children. Alex, the most studied African grey, learned around 100 words, named colours and shapes, and grasped the concept of zero before he died in 2007. βAs smart as a 5-year-oldβ is loose shorthand, not a measured result.
- Ostrich eggs equal 24 chicken eggs. The largest bird lays the largest egg β about 1.4 kg. One ostrich egg omelet feeds 8 people.
- Eagles can spot a rabbit from 3 km away. Their eyes resolve fine detail several times better than ours. The trick of following rodent urine trails by ultraviolet light belongs to kestrels, not eagles.
- Peacock feathers aren’t actually colored. The iridescent blue and green come from microscopic structures that bend light β like a soap bubble. The pigment is brown.
- Penguins can’t fly but they’re the best swimmers among birds. Their wings evolved into flippers, and emperor penguins can dive 500 meters deep and hold their breath for 20 minutes.
- Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards. Their wings rotate in a figure-8 pattern, giving them hovering ability like a helicopter.
Ideas for using the bird generator
π Bird-watchers with kids: Generate a bird and challenge kids to identify it, mimic its call, or spot a related species at the local park.
π¨ Nature journal keepers: Sketch each generated bird with one adaptation labeled β beak shape, feet, wing type. Great for building science observation skills.
π« Adaptation lessons: Perfect for teaching evolution and adaptation. Compare the ostrich (can’t fly, huge) to the hummingbird (all flight, tiny) β both birds, wildly different survival strategies.

Facts on this page were checked against Encyclopaedia Britannica, WWF species profiles, and museum collections including the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Where a popular claim did not hold up under checking, it was removed rather than repeated. Last reviewed July 2026 by Wajid Mahmood.
Frequently asked questions
Which birds can I get?
Owl, eagle, penguin, parrot, flamingo, ostrich, peacock, and hummingbird. Every bird comes with a verified fact, its habitat, diet, and size. We’re planning to add owls of different species, songbirds, hawks, cardinals, and turkeys in upcoming updates to give the bird category serious depth.
Do penguins really give pebbles as gifts?
Some species do. AdΓ©lie and gentoo penguins present a smooth pebble while pair-bonding and building nests together, which is where the “penguin proposal” story comes from. Not all penguin species do this β emperors, for example, incubate on their feet without stones.
Can I generate more than one bird at a time?
Yes. Use the How many buttons under the card to generate 3 or 6 birds at once. This works well for team-vs-team quiz games or for artists who want a batch of subjects for a day’s sketching.
Is this a bird name generator too?
Kind of. Each card gives you a bird species name (like Eagle or Penguin), so if you need random bird names for a story, game character, or pet naming session, this works. For fantasy or scientific-sounding names, though, a dedicated bird name generator would give you options like “Emberwing” or “Vermilion Sunlark.”
